When we can finally take back control of the remote control and the pups of the Paw Patrol are at last silenced for the night, it’s great to have loads of choice of films to watch.

The selection of movies on Netflix is brilliant for bored parents who need to veg out after a day of chasing the kids round in circles.

There are so many movies on at the moment that I actually don’t know how to choose what to watch next, something I’ve seen before and loved or something new.

If you’re in the same dilemma, here’s some recommendations of films from all genres that I either highly rate as brilliant to watch or provide the brain dead, no thoughts required respite that you need.

If you have Amazon Prime instead, check out my recommendations for Prime viewers in this post.

The Other Boleyn Girl

The Boleyn sisters fight over the affections of King Henry VIII in this period drama. It comes across a bit like what would happen if TOWIE was set in the past, but maybe it really did happen this way. I’m no historian but it’s a nice film to chill out to. Scarlett Johanssen, Eric Bana and Natalie Portman star.

Age of Adaline

Age of Adaline - 35 movies to watch on Netflix

Blake Lively stars as Adaline

Adaline was in her 20s when she was in a terrible accident that froze her in time. She no longer ages. Although this might sound appealing on account of being able to avoid wrinkles and varicose veins, actually Adaline is isolated from those she loves the most. A beautiful story that had me gripped.

Me Before You

Based on the book of the same name, this story sees a young woman fall in love with the paraplegic man she is hired to care for. But there’s heartbreak around the corner. Warning, you must have tissues at the ready.

13 Going on 30

13 Going on 30 - 35 movies to watch on Netflix

Fun and frolics in 13 Going on 30

Jennifer Garner is so fun and hilarious in this movie. She stars as Jenna, a teenage girl who is fed up of her boring life and wishes she was popular and in her 30s. Her wish comes true, but does she really want to be a completely different person. Mark Ruffalo is so gorgeous as the love interest.

Sense and Sensibility

Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet star in this adaptation of the classic novel. Both put in amazing performances as the Dashwood sisters, who are left penniless after the death of their father. As they fall in love and have their hearts broken, will they ever find their happy ending?

Bride and Prejudice

Bride and Prejudice - 35 movies to watch on Netflix

Catchy tunes and a fun twist on the classic story

Really fun musical Bollywood take on the classic Pride and Prejudice story. This is set in modern day India and sees a young Indian woman take offence to a snobbish American tourist. Sparks fly and there are some hilarious moments as well as some seriously catchy songs.

The 40-year-old Virgin

This has to be one of Steve Carrell’s finest moments. Yes it has a reputation as a gross-out movie but it has so much heart to it as well. One for the ladies and the fellas.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

An ensemble cast makes for a slightly messy and weakly scripted rom com, but it’s good for brain dead viewing. It’s based on the book of the same name, kind of, and follows various pregnant ladies through their journeys to becoming mums. There are some really cute moments and for women who have been through horrendously uncomfortable pregnancies, you will nod along and smile.

Friends with Kids

This independent film has some brilliant performances and a really lovely storyline. Best friends decide to have a kid together while keeping romance out of the equation. What could go wrong?

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Salmon Fishing on the Yemen - 35 movies to watch on Amazon Prime

Love by the Yemen

Ewan McGregor is a total fishing nerd, but still very fit, in a really great romantic drama also starring Emily Blunt. Both the leads are funny and engaging, plus the storyline is a bit different too. A fisheries expert is asked to help bring salmon fishing to the Yemen, which is a less than ideal climate for the fish. On the way he meets and falls in love with the brilliant Blunt.

What’s Your Number

A pretty trashy rom com but it stars Anna Faris and Chris Evans who are both so likeable you don’t care that the script is a bit dodgy.

There are some brilliant laugh out loud moments in this film, which was written by and stars the brilliant Amy Schumer. She stars as Amy, a woman with serious commitment issues. If you haven’t seen her Netflix stand-up show The Leather Special, check that out too, it’s so funny.

District 9

A fascinating take on the issue of racism told with help from fake news clips and interviews as if it were a documentary put together after the event. A UN worker, Wikus, is helping to clear a refugee camp packed with alien visitors who are stranded on earth. Known as prawns, the aliens have no rights and are treated appallingly. But as one of them plots to escape Earth, Wikus becomes tangled up in the desperate race for survival.

World War Z

Brad Pitt stars in this zombie apocalypse movie. It brings little new material to the genre but it’s quite entertaining viewing.

Spy - 35 movies to watch on Amazon Prime

A silly and fun take on the spy genre

Melissa McCarthy is hilarious as a behind-the-scenes agent who volunteers to go into the field when a colleague is shot. It’s very, very silly, but also very funny. Rose Byrne is brilliant as the big-haired, bratty, and evil arms dealer.

Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2

Uma Thurman kicks some serious arse in this Quentin Tarantino movie all about revenge. Uma stars as The Bride, who is shot alongside her friends and fiancé on her wedding day by Bill. She survives and sets out for bloody revenge. There are some seriously impressive visuals in this two-parter movie and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The Equalizer

Denzel Washington is a total hero as he fights and shoots his way through some bad guys to protect the weak and abused. It’s a solid action thriller movie and Washington is just amazing, as always.

Jack Reacher

Reacher fans were up in arms when they found out Tom Cruise had been cast as the titular character from the series of novels. However I think he’s pretty awesome in this movie, which is great fun and action-packed from start to finish.

Side Effects

A woman is put on anti-depressants after her husband is released from jail. They lead to disturbing and devastating side effects which leaves her doctor trying to piece together a mystery.

A creepy and effective cat and mouse thriller. A deaf woman is alone in her country home when a killer begins stalking her from outside of the house. How will she survive? Edge of your seat stuff.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect - 35 movies to watch on Amazon Prime

An oldie but a goodie

One of Ashton Kutcher’s best movies, it spanned a series of sequels which aren’t worth your time. However this one is really interesting, well-paced and keeps you guessing until the end. Ashton is a young man who discovers he can travel in time, but is he ruining his future by meddling with the past?

Eastern Promises

A dark and somber movie about Russian mobsters. Naomi Watts is a nurse who discovers a diary written by an abused young girl. She becomes caught up in the mob’s web as she struggles to protect the girl’s young baby. This is not a light-hearted movie but it’s well worth a look if you’re in the mood for something gritty.

Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips - 35 movies to watch on Amazon Prime

Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips

Based on the true story of piracy off the coast of Africa, Tom Hanks stars as the freighter captain who tangles with pirates as they take over his ship. The tense stand-off at the end is brilliant and this is a really gripping re-telling of actual events.

Magic Mike

Fancy seeing a host of fine-looking men getting their kit off? Then this one is for you. Channing Tatum and Matthew McConnaughey star.

Slumdog Millionaire

This Oscar-winner sees a young Indian boy reflect on the tragic and heart-warming events of his life as he competes in Who Wants to be a Millionaire?.

Steve Coogan and Judi Dench are a wonderful double act. This is based on a true story of how a woman decides she must track down her son, who was taken from her as a baby when she lived at a convent. The story veers from funny to heartbreaking to uplifting. A really subtle but delightful film.

Les Misérables

Les Miserables - 35 movies to watch on Amazon Prime

Les Mis

Not one to watch after you’ve had a few sleepless nights and are feeling a bit emotional. As the title suggests, it’s a pretty miserable affair. However the songs and performances are so beautiful and moving. Set in 19th century France, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) breaks parole and starts a respectable life. However ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) is never far behind.

Shawshank Redemption

It was a flop at the box office way back in 1994 when it was released but wow has it made up for it since. Shawshank didn’t develop the cult following it has today until after its video release. It now regularly features in the top 10 greatest movies of all time. Tim Robbins is the man falsely accused of murder sent to prison. There he meets fellow inmate Morgan Freeman and the two form a strong friendship. But can he prove his innocence?

Don’t watch it on a plane! Denzel Washington is the alcoholic pilot involved in a freak air disaster. The crash is shot in a scarily immersive sequence. The following inquiry sees Denzel wrestle with his demons.

Gone Baby Gone

Casey Affleck is a private investigator hired to look for a missing little girl. But all is not what it seems and the case takes many twists and turns as he fights to find the truth.

Zero Dark Thirty

Zero Dark Thirty - 35 films to watch on Netflix

Want a movie with a strong female lead? This is it

The hunt and eventual assassination of Osama Bin Laden is dramatised in this gripping thriller. Jessica Chastain is a force to be reckoned with as the CIA agent tasked with trying to track Bin Laden down.

A silly teen horror film but it is really unique. A group of friend chatting online find their conversation interrupted by a mysterious user. Could it be their dead classmate, who they were all guilty of bullying?

A found footage film following a news reporter and camera man as they join a fire crew for the night shift. Things turn nasty when they’re called to an apartment building where a mystery outbreak has infected the residents, turning them violent.

Fighting back

This refreshing addition to the horror genre sees a young women taken to meet her boyfriend’s parents and siblings for the first time. When the family is attacked my masked killers, it turns out the woman is as helpless as she at first seemed. A twisty, turny fright-fest.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This is a ghost story meets courtroom drama. A priest is put on trial for killing a young woman who he attempted to save from demon possession by performing an exorcism that went wrong. It switches between flashbacks to Emily’s terrifying ordeal and the trial where the supernatural events are called into question.
