Salt dough is a fantastic way to make fun Christmas crafts with your toddler or pre-schooler.
The recipe for salt dough is non-toxic, takes only minutes to mix up and your toddler can easily help you out with the mixing and measuring part. It’s a great lesson in maths for them!
Once you’ve made your salt dough, there are so many things your toddler can do with it.
It’s the kind of activity that keeps my two busy for an entire afternoon!
Get some cookie cutters of various shapes and sizes and let them play, shape and mould the dough to whatever they want. You could also capture your child’s hand and foot prints to be hung on the Christmas tree.
Just don’t forget to pop a hole into the dough shape before you pop it into the oven to bake. I used a sharp pencil, but you can also use a kebab stick or anything similar.
Once our salt dough decorations were baked we painted them together. We used glitter paint to bring out the handprint in one decoration and bright colours for the other. The girls loved painting them!

Recipe for salt dough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Mix all of the ingredients together in a big mixing bowl (the bigger the better as your toddler will make less mess that way). Use a fork or a wooden spoon.
Once the ingredients are roughly combined, knead them together with your hands until you form a smooth dough.
Now the salt dough is ready to be used! Break pieces off and let your child roll them out with a rolling pin and cut them into shapes.

There are some truly gorgeous ways to capture your little ones early Christmases.
Once you have finished shaping your ornament, you will need to bake it at about 180C for around two hours. Check every 20 minutes to ensure your dough has not burned.
Once it’s cooled, it’s now ready to decorate with paint. It’s a good idea to use some kind of sealing product – Mod Podge – over the paint once you’ve finished decorating. This will help the salt dough decoration to last for longer.
