This super cool boy’s name is a medieval form of Henry of German origin and means home ruler.
If you choose Harry as your baby’s name then their most famous namesake will be Prince Harry – whose birth name is actually Henry but he has always been known as Harry.
There’s also the wizard Harry Potter from the popular children’s books and singer Harry Styles.
Harry is a playful and fun name that is among the most popular baby names in the UK. In 2021 it was the 7th most used boy name in England and Wales.
In the US baby name charts, the name Henry is in the top 10 boy names, but its closely related version Harry is not a popular name and way down in the 700s in the popularity charts.
What names go with Harry
If you want to take inspiration from the royals then Prince Harry has several middle names for you to consider – Charles Albert David. Any of these are brilliant if you love a traditional, vintage name.
Because Harry is a modern twist on a traditional name you can pair it with both vintage and unusual new names.
For vintage middle names I love Harry Arthur and Harry Thomas. More modern choices such as Harry Dexter and Harry Kai also sound great.

Tips for choosing a middle name
When we were finalising our children’s names it wasn’t a decision that we found easy to make.
Giving someone a name they will carry with them for life is a big deal! In the end we didn’t decide on a name for either of the girls until over a week after they were born.
The most challenging part is finding a compromise that you both love – and you both need to really love the name – and picking out that middle name.
Now some people find the middle name easy – because maybe there’s a relative who they want to honour by using their name. However if you’re struggling, then try these tips!
Find your inspiration
You may name your baby after a relative, or an important place, such as a country or city. Maybe there is something in nature that inspires you – for example forest baby names such as Oak, Wren and Leaf.
Virtue names are becoming increasingly popular, with names like Hero, Maverick and Ace giving something a little different.
Start with the type of baby names that appeal to you – whether that be traditional, modern or very unique. If you want a name with meaning, then consider words that have meaning for you. Do you want a baby name that means “love”, for example, or “hope”.
Write it down
Always write the names you like down and include your surname so you can see it, as well as sound it out loud.
This gives you a chance to review the name and check to see if the initials spell out anything you would rather avoid.
Remember nicknames
Before finalising a name it’s worth considering the nickname your child could get from this name.
Sometimes nicknames are totally out of your control, as school friends may well label your child and that name could stick. So think about all of the possible nicknames, as if you hate one that could be a dealbreaker.
Have a shortlist before your due date
You don’t have to have firmly decided on a baby name before your due date – I didn’t with either of my kids. At the hospital your child will just be known as Baby Girl/Boy (SURNAME).
So don’t rush yourself to make that final decision, but do have a shortlist of your top preferences ready to go.
This shortlist should be something that you and your partner agree on, as having a name on the shortlist that one of you hates will make the final decision much harder.
