One of the most essential things to buy when you’re pregnant is a maternity pillow.

A great maternity pillow should support your bump and your back to help you find a comfortable position to get a good night’s sleep.

From around four months, your midwife will tell you that you should avoid sleeping on your back, because this position can compress the blood supply to the baby.

Ideally you will sleep on your left side, although I confess I slept on both

my left and my right side during both of my pregnancies and all was well.

The reason for sleeping on your left side during pregnancy is that it increases the blood flow to the placenta, and therefore the baby.

The most comfy position will be having your legs bent with a pillow between your knees.

It can be difficult finding the perfect position when you’re in the third trimester particularly. However the right maternity pillow will help you find the right spot, while giving you the best support, and help you get a good night’s sleep.

Before I carry on, there are lots more tips on getting a good night’s sleep in pregnancy over on this post.

Some maternity pillows can also be great for post-birth, both for your recovery and for supporting your baby when you breastfeed.

Maternity pillows are not cheap, so it’s worth doing your research before you go ahead and make the investment.

If you need a bit of guidance as to what to look for, here’s a buyer’s guide with the key points to watch out for:

How to choose the right maternity pillow for you

With a million and one other things to buy for your baby, it’s likely this is number one in your mind, if not a very close second.

Maternity pillows can cost you close to £100, so it’s important to be clear on your budget from the start. There are a lot of pillows on the market, so decide what you want to spend first before you start shopping.

Amazon have lots of affordable maternity pillows at a wide variety of prices.

Like people, maternity pillows come in all different shapes and sizes.

The U-shape pillow can support both your front and back when lying on your side. The problem with these shapes is they tend to be huge, and your other half will likely hate it because it creates a wall between you and them.

On the other hand, they are extremely comfortable. It’s like sleeping in a giant nest!

A C-shape can be a little smaller than this, but provides similar support. You can have the C behind you supporting your back, or in front helping support your bump. The curves of the C can be tucked between your knees and under your head.

C-shapes are great because they don’t surround you too much, and they make a great nursing support pillow for after the baby is born.

Smaller maternity pillow shapes include the wedge, which simply pops under your bump to prop it up. A smaller pillow is a good option if you’re happy with your existing pillows for your head, but just want something for your bump or back. These are good if you fidget a lot at night, as they are easy to manoeuvre around the bed.

In an ideal world, the entire pillow will be machine washable so that you can just chuck it in the washing machine whenever you want to.

However, at the very least you want a pillow with a removable cover that can be machine washed. This is especially important to consider if you have a pillow that you will go on to use as a nursing pillow, as it can end up being covered with milk.
