Looking for the perfect changing bag for two kids?
If you’re going to be out and about with a baby and a toddler then you’ll need a few essentials to make your life easier.
You might think you need a changing bag that works like the Doctor’s Tardis so that it can magically fit all of their stuff, but actually there are some great bags on the market for parents of two kids.
When I had my second baby my toddler wasn’t yet two and was still in nappies. This meant I needed a bag that fit nappies for both kids, plus food and changes of clothes for both.
When we went out for an entire day together, this meant I needed quite a lot of stuff!
My first bit of advice is to separate the stuff so that each child’s things are easy to find.
This may mean using plastic bags or different pockets so that you have separated things like:
- Changes of clothes
- Food and snacks
- Toys
- Your own essentials like keys and money
This just means you can get your hands on things quicker rather than rooting around in a bag packed with stuff.
The key to making your changing bag work when you have two kids is packing extremely light and also making effective use of your pushchair’s basket.
You can also buy small changing pouches that attach to your pushchair’s handlebars. These have enough space to fit spare nappies and wipes, which saves a lot of space in your changing bag and means these essential items are within easy reach at all times.
What features to look for in a changing bag for two kids
When shopping for a changing bag for two kids these are the features you will find the most useful:
Easy to carry
With two kids it’s more important than ever that you have use of both hands! So something that is easy to carry is essential.
Look for a bag that does not slip off your shoulder or need holding with your hand. This is why I really recommend getting a backpack as your changing bag for two kids.
There are some super stylish changing bag backpacks on the market, plus many are designed to be pretty neutral so that they suit the tastes of both parents.
Spacious
If you will be going on lots of days out with both of your kids then you will want a change bag that’s spacious.
Look for bags that make efficient use of large space.
For example the Storksak Hero backpack features an internal shelf that divides the space in to, which access from the top and bottom. This means you won’t be yanking everything out of the bag to reach what’s at the bottom! I have this bag and honestly it is amazing (my kids are now 4 and 6 and I still use it whenever I take them out for the day).
Lightweight
Leather bags are beautiful, and also have the added bonus of looking like a handbag so you can also use it for work should you wish.
But leather bags are heavy! I recommend looking for something made from a wipe clean fabric that is super light. Fabric like nylon works really well.
Pockets
In my personal opinion a changing bag cannot have too many pockets. It helps when they’re a variety of sizes, and in different locations. Internal ones are great for safely stashing your phone.
External pockets are great for slipping essentials you’ll need to grab quickly, such as packs of wipes.
Some bags have external pockets that fit bottles (mine does) and I cannot recommend this feature enough. It means you can quickly grab a drink of water for your toddler.
Some bags also have insulated bottle pockets, which are particularly great if you have a bottle of breast or formula milk for your baby that you want to keep stored at a lower temperature.
Separate pouches
Many changing bags come with extra pouches for your to store your baby and toddler’s stuff in.
These can be handy for keeping outfit changes, or your essentials like spare change, keys and your phone.
Insulated bottle or food bag
An insulated bottle bag can be used to transport both milk for your baby and lunch for your toddler. They’re usually big enough to fit in some sandwiches as well as a bottle.
Many changing bags come with them as an added extra, but I definitely recommend buying a separate insulated bag that will fit your bottles if not as they make it easier to transport them.
Changing mat
A decent changing bag should come with its own mat as standard. You can buy them separately, but ones that include their own changing mat often have specific compartments or places where they fit just right so they don’t take up too much space.
