Funny Elf on the Shelf ideas
These are my favourite funny Elf on the Shelf ideas – many take just a few minutes to set up with my handy free printables!
Elfufu
Elf on the Shelf is disguising himself as a Labubu! You can either hang him on your child’s bag – if they have a Labubu themselves then have it tag along with their Labubu.

To do this, I took a photo of my daughter’s Labubu, then cropped the face to make a mask on my computer.
Want a copy for yourself? You can grab it here. Just cut it out and use a glue dot to stick it to Elf’s face.
Labubu kidnapped Elf
The Elf on the Shelf has been taped to the wall by Labubu – or your child’s favourite toy.

This is a super quick idea. Use Christmas patterned tape to make it look really cute.
Elf becomes Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters
If your kids are huge fans of the Netflix movie Kpop Demon Hunters then they’ll love some stunts inspired by the movie.

Your Elf could be battling demons – using any dragon or dinosaur toys your child has – or have donned their own Rumi hair!
I used purple pipe cleaners and a cap made of tinfoil to make my “wig” for the Elf. I then put a glow stick in the Elf’s hands to act as a “sword”.
You can also leave the Elf out with a can of drink and a note saying “you’re my little soda pop” as a nod to the song from the movie.

Singing cans
The Elf on the Shelf has assembled a choir to sing for your child!

All you need for this one is to gather some soda cans and crunch them in the middle a little so they bend forwards slightly. Now add googly eyes to each can.
I added a “My Little Soda Pop” sign to show the cans are singing a song from KPop Demon Hunters.
Elf on thin ice

The elf has fallen through the ice and cannot get out!
Use cling film (also known as saran wrap) to cover the sink and then create a small hole in the middle.
Add mini white marshmallows around the edges and some flour or sugar as the snow. A note saying “Danger! Thin Ice” completes the stunt. You can download blank Elf note templates here.
Elf snowball fight

Elf is using mini mashmallows to have a snowball fight with your child’s favourite toy – I’ve used a Labubu here.
Elf is Steve from Minecraft
If your kids are big Minecraft fans then they will love this cool gamer-inspired idea!

I created this Steve mask by heading to this website with Minecraft faces. I then printed off the image. You can either stick the image to a paper cube that fits over Elf’s head, or use glue dots to stick the mask to Elf’s face.
I also did a Creeper face!

Elf drew on the eggs
This is such a simple but really funny idea! Grab your box of eggs from the fridge and doodle faces on them.

You could stick with a theme – such as drawing only animal faces or Christmas elves – or just draw a range of emotions. I did a mixture for ours.
Elf is Spiderman
Elf has turned superhero and is hanging around your home! I used dental floss to create the web string for our Elf.

I tied up Elf’s arms and legs into Spiderman’s classic hanging upside-down pose and then hung him from our stairs.
To create the mask, I simply found an image of Spiderman’s face online, then popped it into a document on my computer and printed it off, then cut it out and stuck it on Elf’s face with a glue dot.

Melted snowman
Elf brought your child a snowman but didn’t think about the temperature inside the house! The snowman has melted into a puddle.

I used a couple of twigs, some chocolate chunks and the tip of a carrot to do this one. I also added a little red fabric as a scarf. You could use doll clothes for a hat and scarf if you like.
I then popped them all in a small dish, and added a note from the Elf too!
My blank notes from the Elf make a great accompaniment to any Elf stunts you do that need a note to go with them. Download my Elf notes here.
Elf grated some M&Ms

You’ll need some crayons and a pack of M&Ms for this trick. Skittles work too!
Just get out a grater from your kitchen, gently grate the tops of some crayons and then place some M&Ms spilling out of the grater.
Elf is having spa day
This one looks cool but is simple to put together. Use tissues to wrap around the Elf’s body and head to make it look as if they are towels. Then take a small bowl – I used a dipping bowl – and fill with either mini marshmallows or cotton wool balls.

Elf’s shrinking machine
Elf has invented a shrinking machine and is using it to create smaller versions of your child’s favourite treats.
You can do this with M&Ms like the picture here, or use cookies or anything else where you can get a large and a small version.

I just wrapped up a box and then made conveyor belts using some tin foil on either side.
Elf got an Apple watch
The Elf has treated your child to an Apple watch! Grab a piece of paper and draw a watch strap, and then draw a clock face on an apple.

You could also try recreating the homescreen of an actual Apple watch on the front of the apple.
Elf climbs the wall
Elf has taken a shortcut and is climbing up the wall using Christmas gift bows.

This one is easily done, as you just stick some gift bows up the wall and then use tape or Blu Tac to attach Elf to the wall in a climbing position.
Elf takes an elfie selfie
This is a great Elf on the Shelf idea for older kids and uses my free printable elfie selfie Instagram frame.

Simply print and cut it out, then position the Elf anywhere you like.
Elf feeds the dinosaurs
The Elf is ignoring a sign warning him “do not feed the dinosaurs” and throwing mini marshmallows at some plastic toy dinos.

Elf wants to play
My Elf on the Shelf printable notes are the perfect way to get easy inspiration every single day of December.

There are 24 different notes you can use, including funny and playful ideas.
Elf makes a rainbow
My kids loved seeing the rainbow appear after pouring warm water on these skittles.

Arrange the skittles on a plate in a circle, or a square, in any pattern you like, and leave a note from the Elf telling your kids to add some warm water. You only need enough water to touch the Skittles to make the rainbow appear!
Elf decorated the bathroom
I got some festive-themed tile stickers and stuck them to our toilet, then cut some patterns on the toilet paper for this fun idea.

Elf is slurping on maple syrup
Elf wanted a drink and so put a straw in the maple syrup and is slurping it up.

A very good last-minute Elf idea – and can be done with more than one Elf.
