We all love a pizza but we don’t love the guilt that comes with it.

That’s why I often turn to this homemade version, when I have enough energy to manage making the dough from scratch. It’s been adapted from a Lorraine Pascale recipe from the book Eating Well Made Easy.

It’s actually really easy but the kneading bit can be quite tiring and hard when there’s a toddler at your feet demanding to know when the pizza is going to be ready.

I don’t add any salt as I give some to my toddler but you can season if you want. I normally pop some chorizo or pepperoni on top for us, as pictured below, or chicken for my daughter as well for the last bit of cooking with the cheese but you could add whatever else you want.

The base always comes out really nicely and I love the oregano flavour.

I often make the dough in advance and just put it in a bowl and cover until I need it as that can save time at dinner time.

I don’t kid myself that this recipe is healthy but I do think it’s healthier than a takeaway. At least you can control the amount of salt and oil that goes into it.

The harissa makes it a bit spicy but you can always leave this out if you can’t stand the heat! I find this serves us and our toddler when we’re kind enough to share a slice with her!


300g spelt wholemeal flour
75g sachet of fast acting dry yeast
2 tsp dried oregano
150ml passata
1-2tsp harissa paste
1 large tomato (cut into chunks)
250g mozarella
Fresh basil
Toss the flour and yeast in a large bowl.
Add 175ml water and stir well with a wooden spoon then make it into a ball with your hands.
Lightly dust a clean surface with flour, and knead for about 8 minutes.
Flatten and sprinkle over the oregano leaves then knead for a couple of minutes until these are mixed in.

Roll out the dough as thinly as possible into a circle or rectangle (up to you!).

Mix the passata and harissa and spread it over the base. Scatter the chopped tomatoes.
Put the pizza in a oven preheated to 220C and cook for about 10 minutes.
Take it out and tear the mozzarella over the top and cook again for about 5 minutes.
Tear the basil and sprinkle over the top.
Cut into slices.
Serve and enjoy!
