Nothing beats a juicy beef burger. It’s a crowd-pleaser for the entire family!
While buying your burgers pre-made saves a little time, honestly they taste so much better when you make them yourself and it works out cheaper when you can batch them.

The great thing about making them yourself is you can adapt it to your taste.
You could switch beef for lamb, add in whatever herbs you want, maybe add some spice to bring a little heat!
When it comes to kids, I find they prefer theirs pretty simple! While I add diced onions to the recipe for me and my husband, I avoid them for the kids. They are fussy about finding onions in their food right now!
So check out this recipe, but remember you can adapt it to however you need! The breadcrumbs and egg bind it together, but after that, you can add whatever flavours or extras you can think of.
How to make homemade beef burgers
It takes just a few minutes to put together your burgers.
Simply take:
- Beef mince – around 110g -120g per person
- Chopped onion – 1tsp of diced onion per burger
- Breadcrumbs – I get panko breadcrumbs and use roughly one tablespoon
- Egg – one beaten egg helps bind everything together
Mix these ingredients together in a bowl until they are fully combined and then divide into balls. Squash each ball down with your hands, or a spatula, to make your burgers.
Can these burgers be made in advance?
If you’re not eating your burgers right away then fear not, they are so easy to store.
I store mine in a food storage box, with baking parchment paper between each burger to keep them separate.
You can freeze them right away (and use in six months) or pop them in the fridge where I like to use them up within a day.
What to put on your burger?
I like to add cheese and salsa, plus some sliced tomatoes and lettuce.
My kids often like to have a slice of bacon.
Other toppings include:
- Jalapenos
- Sliced onion
- Hot sauce
- BBQ sauce
- Mushrooms
- Pickles cucumber
- Guacamole
- Pineapple (a weird one, but some people love it)
How to make burger relish
This simple relish recipe can be cooked in around 20 minutes and only includes a few ingredients.

I combine chopped fresh tomatoes, diced red onion, chilli flakes and a squeeze of lime juice, plus seasoning, for this. Just fry the onion until soft before adding the tomatoes and other ingredients, then simmer for 20 minutes, or until tomatoes have broken down.
If you want a smooth relish, you can then blend this mixture. I prefer it with the whole pieces of onion and chunks of tomato.

Homemade Beef Burgers
Tasy and easy homemade beef burgers your whole family will love.
Ingredients
- 500g beef mince
- 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 2 tablespoons diced onions
- Seasoning
- Oil (for frying)
- FOR THE SALSA
- 4 tomatoes diced
- 1 red onion chopped
- Juice of one lime
- 1 tsp chilli flakes
Instructions
- Add the beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onions and seasoning to a mixing bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until combined.
- Divide mixture into four equal-sized balls. Flatten the burgers to your desired thickness (I tend to make them about half an inch in height).
- At this stage you can freeze your burgers or pop in the fridge until ready to use.
- When ready to cook, add a tablespoon of oil to a pan over a high heat. Fry the burgers for 4 minutes each side. Continue cooking until meat is cooked through, flipping sides every few minutes. If adding cheese, add to the top of the burger in the final 1 minute of cooking.
- For the relish: In a wide-based pan, fry red onions for around five minutes then add tomatoes, lime and chilli flakes. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for around 20 minutes.
- Serve the burgers in buns and top with the salsa.
