Best Blackout Blinds and Curtains for Baby’s Nursery

A blackout curtain is an essential for baby’s nursery and helping them – and you – get more sleep.

Having a blackout curtain or blind on baby’s windows will block out most of the light from early morning or late night sun, as well as during nap times.

They’re an essential for both babies and toddlers, so whatever you buy chances are you’ll be using it beyond the first year, making it an important newborn essential!

Why use a blackout blind

When your baby is born they have no idea about the difference between day and night.

But one thing’s for sure, bright light just isn’t conducive to getting to sleep!

One of the best ways to help your baby learn the cues for when it’s time for them to snooze is put them to sleep in a darkened room. It should be part of their bedtime routine

If your curtains aren’t so great at keeping the light out, then you can shop these top picks to add to your windows.

Some can be added direct to the window and work with curtains, but we’ve also got a great best buy for nursery blackout curtains to check out too if you want to replace your existing ones.

Types of nursery blackout blind and curtain

There are a range of different options you can check out to keep the light out:

  • Blackout curtains – these have a thicker lining than normal curtains and so keeps more light out of the room. They won’t be as effective generally as blinds, as they don’t fit flush to your window so some light will creep around the edges.
  • Roller blackout blinds – a cheap option if you prefer a fitted option (the below options are portable and easily removable blackout blinds). You’ll need to be sure you keep the roller blind cord safely tucked away well out of baby’s reach.
  • Portable nursery blinds – these have suction cups that stick to the glass and most have velcro patches that let your adjust the size. They’re a great option if don’t want to drill or permanently fit anything to the windows.
  • Blackout blinds on a roll – You can buy sheets of blackout material on a roll that you cut to size and then stick direct to the glass. They stay up thanks to static and then you peel them off when nap time is over.

We’re going to look at the best options within these main types of blind for your baby’s nursery.

Best blackout blind – Tommee Tippee Blackout Blind

Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind for nursery

The ultimate blackout blind for baby’s nursery is the Travel Blackout Blind from Tommee Tippee. This blind fits flush to the glass, blocking most light out and is easy to fit to the window, remove, take with you on the go and pack away when not in use.

This is the perfect blind for using in a nursery, and can be taken with you for a holiday too.

It fits to windows with suction cups and is adjustable to fit different sized windows using Velcro to reduce the dimensions of the blind.

I’ve had this blind since my kids were tiny and it is absolutely fantastic for blocking out the light, especially in summer when this becomes a real issue at bedtime and early in the morning.

Use it at nap time to help baby settle down for sleep too!

You may spot that some reviews say the blind is tricky to fit, with the suction cups sometimes not sticking. Just apply a little water with a damp cloth to the bottom of the cups, then once they’re moist they will stick to the window.

Best budget blind – Blackout Blind Film

The easiest and cheapest option to keep light out of baby’s room is a roll of blackout blind film.

You cut it to size to fit your window and then it sticks to your window thanks to static cling.

When you’re ready to let the light back in you simply peel it off.

It’s a really perfect option if your baby may be sleeping in different rooms at different times of the day, as you just cut another section off for whatever room you need to use it in.

In the UK your best option is the Magic Whiteboard blackout blind roll.

Elsewhere you can try this very similar blackout blind roll from Amazon.

Best travel blackout blind for baby – Dream Art Anywhere

The Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind is a great travel and at home blind, but the Dream Art Anywhere blind is a little cheaper and works in a very similar way.

This blind also includes suction cups and has a pouch for easy packing away when travelling.
