Most popular baby names for England and Wales revealed

Olivia, Amelia and Isla are the most popular baby girl names in England and Wales, while Muhammad has overtaken Noah as the top name for boys.

New entries to the top 100 most popular baby names in England and Wales include Hazel, Lilah, Autumn, Nevaeh and Raya for girls, and Jax, Enzo and Bodhi for boys.

This data comes from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and it gives parents some exciting inspiration for naming their little one if you are expecting in 2025! Alternatively, if you just love talking baby names, the data is fascinating.

Here are some key takeaways from the latest baby names data – which covers the year 2023, the latest year for which data is available.

Top 10 baby names remain relatively unchanged

Although there has been some shuffling among the top baby names, the actual names in the top 10 lists have remained pretty steadfast for another year.

Perhaps the biggest change was Noah being knocked from the top spot for boys by Muhammad.

New additions to the top 10 names for boys included Luca, Henry and Archie. For girls, Willow entered the top 10 names, while Mia exited and slipped to number 16.

Hyphenated names are more popular for girls

There has been an increase in parents giving their little girl a hyphenated name, while this has decreased for boys.

For girls, parents are particularly keen on Mae and Rose for use in a hyphenated name.

High ranking hyphenated girl names include:

  • Isla-Rose
  • Ava-Mae
  • Lily-Rose – likely inspired by the actress Lily-Rose Depp
  • Amelia-Rose
  • Ava-Rose
  • Delilah-Rose
  • Ivy-Mae

Seasonal and weekday names are a hit

Autumn was one of the rising baby names, according to the data, along with Summer.

Weekday names for girls also made waves, with Sunday and Wednesday increasing in popularity. The name Wednesday could be inspired by the popularity of the Netflix series.

Popular culture inspires parents

Movies and music continued to inspire parents in the latest baby name charts with the 2023 blockbuster movies Barbie and Oppenheimer providing inspiration for parents.

There were an additional 215 baby girls named Margot and 14 baby boys named Cillian, compared with 2022.

For music artists, there was an increase in the number of babies named Billie, Lana, Miley and Rihanna for girls, and Kendrick and Elton for boys.

A number of events may have affected the popularity of these names for babies in 2023, including:

  • Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey and Kendrick Lamar touring
  • Rihanna’s performance at the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl halftime show
  • Elton John headlining Glastonbury
  • Miley Cyrus releasing an album

Interestingly, royal baby names have proved less of a hit with parents, with Harry, Archie and Charlotte all falling in popularity.

The Kardashians continue to set trends for baby names, with Reign, Saint, Psalm and Stormi all increasing in popularity.
