24 Free Elf on the Shelf Notes

It’s that time of year when your Elf on the Shelf arrives to sprinkle a little magic onto your family’s festive celebrations.

As someone who has been doing the Elf on the Shelf for my own kids for several years, I know how difficult it can be to come up with new ideas.

Some days you may want to do something really elaborate, and others you want a really quick idea that the kids will love but didn’t take you much effort.

I’m here to help with my gorgeous fun Elf on the Shelf notes. These free printable notes can be downloaded right now and used as props with your Elf on the Shelf.

Some of my free Elf on the Shelf notes work as a complete idea on their own. You don’t need to add any other props, just use the note.

Notes from Elf on the Shelf

I’ve got jokes, notes telling your child to do something fun like draw a picture and silly notes that can accompany stuff the elf is doing.

How to use the Elf on the Shelf notes

You can download your free printable Elf on the Shelf notes at the bottom of this article.

These notes are in PDF format over four pages. I recommend printing on card where you can, as they will stand up easier.

Print them in colour for the best results.

Once you have printed off the notes you then need to cut them out – there are six notes to a page.

Your Elf can either have the note propped up on his lap, or you could get a mini easel to sit alongside the elf and prop the note up on that.

Here’s a guide to the notes included in this free printable bundle and some ideas for how to use them.

  • Mrs Claus sent some treats for you. Can you save one for me? This fun note can be accompanied with some sweet treats for your child. Maybe candy canes, or some Christmas cookies you have baked?
  • Let’s take a elfie selfie. Your child can take a photo of themselves with their Elf buddy.
  • Do you wanna build a snowman? Use this note on a snowy day. Alternatively leave out some toilet roll. Have three rolls stacked on top of each other with a snowman face drawn on the top one. Then have three extra rolls there too so your kid can build their own toilet roll snowman.
  • Have you been naughty or nice? This is a nice interactive note for your child.
  • Let’s draw a Christmas picture. This is a nice creative activity prompt for your child to enjoy.
  • Just X more sleeps. Add the number of days left until Christmas on this note.
  • Let’s write a letter to Santa. Put out this note on the day you would like your child to write their letter to Santa outlining what they want for Christmas. If your child has already done their letter to Santa, then tell them to write to Santa explaining the good things they have done this month. Want help with writing a letter to Santa? Here’s a free letter to Santa template.
  • What kind of music do elves like best? “Wrap” music. A fun joke from your elf.
  • Do 4 nice things today. This a sweet challenge for your child to encourage good behaviour.
  • Let’s paint together. Another creative activity for your child to enjoy. You could leave it out with some new painting supplies.
  • Tic tac toe. Play a game of tic tac toe with the Elf. This game could be left out several days in a row, so your child takes a turn, then the elf has filled in their turn the next day, and so on.
  • I hid 5 ornaments somewhere in the house. Can you find them? A fun treasure hunt for your child. Get 5 ornaments off the tree and dot them around the house for them to find.
  • Let’s have a scavenger hunt. I have hidden 10 treats in the house. Hide some Christmas treats around the house and get your child to search for them.
  • Let’s watch a Christmas movie. A great chance to sit down as a family and watch your favourite festive film.
  • Elf on strike. Use this note when you don’t have many ideas! Elf could be lazing around on a chair.
  • I’m just hanging out. Hang your elf upside down somewhere. We like to do it on the Christmas tree as it’s easy to hook the elf’s legs over some tinsel.
  • Let’s bake cookies. This is a fun prompt to get your child baking some Christmas treats.
  • Sing me a Christmas song. Your child is challenged to sing their favourite Christmas song to the elf.
  • It’s a good thing elves can’t be added to the naughty list. Use this cheeky note alongside the elf when he is doing something really cheeky. That could be that he’s eaten some chocolate (smear chocolate on his face and scatter empty wrappers around him).
  • Uh oh! Naughty warning. Use this note if your child has been a little cheeky and needs to be reminded to be good before Christmas.
  • Tell me 3 things you did today and I’ll let Santa know. A fun prompt so your child chats to your Elf about their day.
  • Let’s read a Christmas story. This note encourages your child to grab their favourite Christmas story and read it to the elf.
  • Let’s decorate the tree. This is a nice one to use if you have some chocolate Christmas tree decorations to add. Or use it alongside some new decorations you have bought to add to the tree.
  • I got a little carried away. Use this note alongside something silly the elf is doing. Maybe elf has been wrapping gifts and has wrapped himself in paper and tape.
