When it comes to living a longer and healthier life, one of the best things we can do is just get outside and stretch our legs.
For me, having children has provided a real incentive to get out more. Not just so that we are living healthier lives, but also because we can’t stay cooped up in the house all day long! We would drive each other bonkers.
It’s great going to the playground or simply ambling along through the park, but there are plenty of ways to make getting active outside even more appealing for the whole family.
Here are my ideas for sports, fun activities to encourage a more active lifestyle with kids:
I remember getting my first pair of skates and being so excited when I laced them up for the first time. I wobbled all around the footpath in our back garden for a few hours and was in heaven.
Getting some skates – the selection from Skatehut is gorgeous – for the whole family is such a fun way for everyone to get some fresh air and enjoy themselves.
Get on your bike
My toddler has just got her first bicycle and she is completely hooked. Getting an adult bicycle with a child’s seat on the back would mean my one-year-old could join in too and we could go whizzing off around the park.
There are so really cute scooters for toddlers on the market and I see adults whizzing around on them all of the time!
Getting some child and grown-up scooters would make a day at the park way more exciting.
Have a scavenger hunt
Hide various goodies around the garden (they could be toys or treats). Make a list with either pictures or drawings if your child doesn’t read yet or names of everything you have hidden. That way your child can cross things off the list as they go.
My toddler adores kicking a ball around. Create some makeshift goals, split the family in half and get competitive. In a very light-hearted way of course.
Blowing bubbles and encouraging your child to chase them is a brilliant activity, and you don’t have to stray much further than your own back garden. Even a little one who is only just crawling can enjoy trying to catch them.
Play hide and seek
Visit your local woods and hide behind some trees while your toddler races to find you. Loads of fun!
Find your local lido
Outdoor pools are so much fun and there seem to be new ones popping up all the time! I have one local to where I live in Reading now, plus there’s several in London.
Of course they are best used in the spring and summer when it’s warm, but swimming is a brilliant workout activity for the whole family. Plus it will definitely wear your kids out. It’s a win-win.
Do you have any outdoor sports or activities that you love doing with your family? Let me know what they are, I’m always looking for new ideas!
